Synopsis

A critical analysis of the Mexican energy sector based on renewable energies is carried out. This reflection links these ‘sustainable’ initiatives with broader processes such as the consumer society and the capitalist interests of the prevailing system, to later analyze how this industry is being built in the country and what are its economic bases and effects in the territories. Among the results, it is highlighted that although energy production in general has indicators of a decrease, in the field of renewable energies and electrical energy production they have had a constant and sustained growth. However, this energy transition is not free of conflicts in the territories where they are intended to be installed, in addition to the fact that this sector is acquiring a private and profit-making nature, which violates Mexico’s energy sovereignty and undermines the original idea of sustainability.
