Obstetric violence and midwifery: good birth as a path to sustainable social development in health
Synopsis
This chapter addresses the issue of midwifery in the face of obstetric violence as a way of managing a good birth in the context of the search for sustainable social development in health. The violence exercised against women at the time of childbirth includes various forms of violence and needs to be understood from the perspective of power relations. It was found that: 1) there are other logics in the care of the health of mothers and babies that are based on empathetic and respectful forms in non-hospital and hospital spaces; 2) the emotional support provided by midwives is a positive element that they carry out throughout the care provided to women; 3) midwives offer alternative ways of caring for and accompanying pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum; favoring that in the midst of contexts of obstetric violence there are spaces in which a good birth can be experienced.
